Algiers, July 16, 2023 – The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is set to hold its elective general assembly before the end of August, as confirmed by sources from Dzair Tube. In the meantime, Mr. Mohamed Rouraoua, with his extensive experience and deep knowledge of Algerian football administration, is expected to assume the acting presidency until the new leader takes over after a year.

The FAF, founded on October 21, 1962, has witnessed a rich history of leaders who have guided Algerian football through both triumphs and challenges. As we look forward to the forthcoming assembly, let us reflect on the remarkable individuals who have held the presidency of the Algerian Football Federation since its inception.

The first president of the Algerian Football Federation was Dr. Mohand Maouche, who served from October 1962 to October 1969. A former player of MC Algiers, Dr. Maouche was reappointed for a second term in 1966, cementing his contributions to the growth and development of Algerian football.

Following Dr. Maouche’s tenure, Mustapha Benaouniche assumed the presidency from October 1969 to July 1973, followed by Amar Benadouda from July 1973 to May 1975. Abdennour Bekka then took the helm from August 1975 to January 1978, steering the federation during a critical phase.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the FAF experienced a series of changes in leadership. Belaïd Lacarne served as president from September 1987 to October 1988, followed by Omar Kezzal, who held office from July 1989 to November 1992 and again from April 2000 to August 2001. Mouldi Aissaoui led the federation from September 1993 to July 1994, followed by Rachid Harraïgue from July 1994 to January 1995. Mohamed Laïb briefly assumed the presidency from August 1996 to December 1996, and Mohamed Diabi held the position from November 1997 to June 1999.

One of the most prominent figures in Algerian football, Mohamed Raouraoua, shaped the FAF during various periods. He served as president from November 2001 to January 2006, then again from February 2009 to February 2013, and finally from March 2013 to February 2017. Following Raouraoua’s tenure, Hamid Haddadj took charge from January 2006 to February 2009.

Kheïreddine Zetchi, who led the Algerian Football Federation with distinction, held office from March 2017 to March 2021. He was succeeded by Charaf-Eddine Amara, whose term extended from April 2021 to March 2022.

On July 7, 2022, Zefizef Jahid was elected as the president during the previous elective general assembly.

As the FAF prepares for the upcoming elective general assembly, expectations are high among football enthusiasts throughout Algeria. The process of selecting a new president will undoubtedly shape the future of Algerian football, and all eyes will be on the individuals vying for this prestigious role.
