Economic development: Algeria attached to African objectives

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, reiterated on Wednesday during his participation in the work of the 39th Summit of the Orientation Committee of Heads of State and Government of NEPAD, “the Algeria’s attachment to the objectives of economic development and continental integration,” said a press release from the ministry.

In this regard “he particularly underlined that, under the impetus of its Steering Committee, NEPAD has enabled Africa to take ownership of its development agenda in a significant way through better cooperation with its various economic partners. “, adds the statement of the ministry.

“In addition, the head of the Algerian diplomacy recalled the contribution of Algeria in the promotion and acceleration of regional economic integration through the realization of structuring projects with continental scope like the Trans-Saharan Road, the Optical Backbone linking Algeria, Niger and Nigeria as well as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline linking Nigeria to Algeria,” the statement added.

The document observes that “this Summit meeting proceeded to the appointment of the new Executive Secretary of AUDA-NEPAD, in succession to Dr Ibrahim Mayaki who has led the agency since 2009”.

In this regard, Mr. Lamamra “provided Algeria’s support for the appointment of the Ethiopian Mrs. Nardos Bekele-Thomas, whose candidacy has been accepted and will be submitted for endorsement to the AU Summit scheduled for 5 to February 6 in Addis Ababa”, underlines the press release, noting that “the mandate of President Paul Kagame at the head of the Orientation Committee of Heads of State and Government in charge of NEPAD, has been extended for one year. by acclamation with the support of Algeria”.

The ministry statement noted, finally, that “in addition to assessing the progress made in the implementation of regional development programs, in particular the AU’s Agenda 2063, this meeting “provided the opportunity to set development priorities for the next year and examine the prospects for strengthening Africa’s resilience in the face of the Covid-19 health crisis”.
