ALGIERS- The regional office of the Democratic Labor Confederation in Morocco expressed deep concern over the “unbearable” surge in prices, stating that it now “threatens the majority of Moroccans and workers in their basic livelihoods, especially regarding food and agricultural products.”
In a released statement, the union emphasized the imperative need for a general wage increase, as committed to in the April 30, 2022 agreement between the government and the most representative labor central organizations.
The union pointed out that the national context is marked by “the erosion of purchasing power, the high cost of living, the destruction of public facilities, and the stifling of serious and responsible trade union work.”
Furthermore, the Democratic Labor Confederation urged the relevant authorities to protect the right to union membership and reduce harassment against union members in companies. They stressed that “respecting labor law, basic workers’ rights, and engaging in genuine, responsible dialogue and negotiation are the only ways to elevate the level of labor relations, enhance productivity, and strengthen social harmony.”
The union categorically rejected any attempt by the state to shirk its responsibilities in ensuring quality education for the children of the people. They also opposed any forced displacement of citizens for the benefit of real estate and cement lobby interests.
Commending the responsible stance and high national consciousness of the National Union of Education, affiliated with the Democratic Labor Confederation, the union highlighted their adept management of protests and negotiations concerning the demands of men and women in education. Additionally, the union expressed readiness to provide free tutoring lessons at the union’s premises.
Addressing the local situation in the city of Mohammedia, the union rejected the approach of closing major companies in the city and displacing thousands of workers and their families to satisfy real estate and cement lobby interests.
The Confederation renewed its call for the resumption of production at the Moroccan Refining Company (formerly Samir) and the rescue of the Kettara Group from collapse. They urged assistance for all companies facing difficulties while preserving the gains of these enterprises for the benefit of the national economy and local development.
