Algiers, Algeria | September 24th, 2024 — On Tuesday, various educational unions and parent associations expressed their strong support for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent decisions during the latest Cabinet meeting, which are aimed at advancing the education sector and addressing the concerns of educational staff and students.
Messaoud Boudiba, the president of the Autonomous National Council of Education Personnel (CNAPESTE), emphasized that the resolutions stemming from the Cabinet meeting reflect a political will to address the needs of the educational community, encompassing both teachers and students. He asserted the importance of implementing these decisions within a clearly defined timeline, aligning with the President’s commitment to addressing field-based concerns.
Equal Opportunities Through Technology
Boudiba particularly highlighted the initiative to generalize the use of electronic tablets, advocating for the preservation of equal opportunities for all students while adapting to technological advancements. He noted that this approach should ensure that no student is left behind in accessing educational resources.
Regarding the introduction of a specific status for the education sector by the end of the current year, Boudiba welcomed this decision, which aims to elevate the role and recognition of educators in Algeria’s educational framework.
Sadek Dziri, president of the National Union of Education and Training Personnel (UNPEF), also praised the Cabinet’s resolutions, particularly those concerning the support for students who have repeated grades. He noted that these measures would provide these students with the opportunity to retake the baccalaureate and the BEM exams, thereby reducing school dropout rates.
Towards a Tablet-Driven Learning Environment
On the topic of implementing electronic tablets to replace traditional school bags, Dziri called for a coordinated effort to ensure that at least 50% of students receive these devices by the end of the current academic year, reinforcing the principle of equal access to educational technology.
Addressing the need for a specific status for the education sector, Dziri emphasized the necessity of revising labor laws to ensure that the unique needs of all educational staff are met.
Djamila Khiar, president of the National Federation of Parent Associations, echoed the positive reception of President Tebboune’s decisions, particularly concerning the reintegration of students who have repeated grades, allowing them to sit for their exams. She highlighted that these efforts are crucial in shielding students from social challenges that could arise from educational failure.
Khiar also noted that the initiative to implement electronic tablets would alleviate the burden of carrying heavy school bags, aligning with the Ministry of Education’s ongoing efforts to lighten students’ loads.
A Commitment to Reform and Growth in Education
President Tebboune has tasked the Minister of Education with adopting and generalizing electronic tablets as a replacement for traditional school materials, with a target of reaching at least 50% implementation by the end of the academic year. He reiterated the importance of supporting students who have faced setbacks and providing them with opportunities for reintegration, thereby reducing school dropout rates.
Moreover, the President has committed to establishing a specific status for the education sector before the year’s end. He also called for the reorganization of school sports and physical education programs to cultivate elite athletes and foster competitive spirit among students. Additionally, plans are underway to launch a national school sports championship for team sports starting in January.
With these strategic initiatives, President Tebboune aims to foster an inclusive and progressive educational environment that not only addresses the immediate concerns of the educational community but also lays a solid foundation for the future of Algeria’s youth. The collaborative efforts of unions, associations, and the government signal a renewed commitment to improving educational outcomes across the nation.
