Algiers, Algeria | July 31st, 2024 — The El-Bina Movement has voiced strong support for Algeria’s recent decision to recall its ambassador from Paris, describing the move as a fitting response to France’s imprudent recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara. This recognition was announced as the “sole basis” for resolving the conflict in Western Sahara under Morocco’s claimed sovereignty.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the El-Bina Movement characterized Algeria’s decision as a necessary and measured reaction to France’s controversial stance. The movement criticized France for its failure to move beyond its colonial legacy and for disregarding the neocolonial dimensions of the Western Sahara conflict. France, the movement argued, should have worked alongside Algeria to contribute to international efforts aimed at achieving a just, durable, and acceptable political solution for the Sahrawi people.

El-Bina expressed unwavering confidence in President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s judgment and his ability to address the French government’s irresponsible decision. The movement affirmed its full support for any further actions President Tebboune may take in response to France’s actions, emphasizing that France must bear full responsibility for its dishonorable conduct and blatant disregard for its international commitments. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, France is expected to uphold the resolutions recognizing the legitimacy of the Sahrawi cause and the Sahrawi people’s right to a referendum on self-determination.
