El Moudjahid Forum: FLN Secretary General Abdelkrim Benmbarek – “We Will Go to the Elections Unified”

FLN Secretary General Benmbarek's Vision: Unity and Participation in Upcoming Elections

ALGIERS- Abdelkrim Benmbarek, the new Secretary General of the National Liberation Front (FLN), asserted that the party, as the leading force in the political landscape, is committed to maintaining its supremacy by actively participating in and contributing to the success of the upcoming presidential elections. These statements were made during his appearance at the El Moudjahid forum yesterday.

While acknowledging the President’s decision to hold early presidential elections on September 7th as a sovereign decision, the FLN is taking time to deliberate on its final position regarding the elections. Nonetheless, the party has initiated preparations by establishing a committee to deliberate on the forthcoming elections. The method by which the party plans to engage in the elections remains uncertain. Will it field its own candidate or support a consensus candidate from outside the FLN ranks? Benmbarek clarified, “It is the Central Committee, the sovereign body between two congresses, that will convene after the President of the Republic calls for the electoral process, and will express its sovereign decision at that time.”

“We have competent members within the FLN, including members of the Central Committee. This committee will be present in all provinces and will have district-level cells,” he added. Benmbarek is determined to avoid a repetition of the bitter episode of December 2019, when the interim leadership of the FLN chose to support the former interim Secretary General of the National Democratic Rally instead of a member of its own Central Committee. “Discipline and adherence to party regulations are crucial to prevent the fragmentation of ranks and to deter adventurers who tarnish the FLN’s reputation,” affirmed the party leader. “We will approach this election with unity, and this unity of ranks will be achieved through a collective and participatory approach that rejects exclusion and discrimination,” he assured, stressing the importance of maintaining the unity and cohesion of the party.

Benmbarek also pledged to open the doors of the party to all unfairly sidelined and excluded militants, and to work towards preserving the stability of the FLN. “We view this stability as a non-negotiable boundary,” he stated. He called on party militants to prepare and consolidate their ranks in anticipation of the upcoming electoral contests. According to the Secretary General, “the most crucial aspect now is to rebuild trust in order to conduct the next political consultations with unified ranks, in a spirit of dialogue and away from conflicts of interest.” Abdelkrim Benmbarek is thus committed to a comprehensive reunification effort of the party’s “big family,” “without exception,” including “veterans,” youth, and women.

When questioned about the possibility of forming alliances with other political parties to face the upcoming elections together, the FLN Secretary General did not rule out the possibility of joining electoral “initiatives.” “All initiatives that arise will be subject to debate within the party’s bodies, including the Political Bureau,” he responded.

In conclusion, Benmbarek “urged all the active forces, parties, civil society, social actors, and components of our country’s elite to make this significant national event a new milestone for a strong Algeria with robust institutions.”
