Algeria’s Presidential Elections: Elders of Ahaggar Endorse President Tebboune for a Second Term

Algiers, Algeria | July 16th, 2024 — The elders and tribal leaders of Ahaggar have expressed their strong support for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s candidacy for a second presidential term. This endorsement was reaffirmed during their regular meeting with Chief Elder ‘Aménokal’ Ahmed Idaber, held at the Houari Boumediene Youth Center in Tamanrasset.

The meeting, which took place yesterday, concluded with a final statement emphasizing that their backing for President Tebboune was not a new development but had been in place since the 2019 presidential elections. Chief Elder Ahmed Idaber called for robust participation in the upcoming presidential elections, highlighting the need for a united front.

Chief Elder Idaber reiterated the steadfastness of the region’s inhabitants in their historical commitments and emphasized that this regular meeting, coinciding with the month of national sovereignty restoration, serves as a strong message to all adversaries of national unity. The meeting aimed to facilitate communication and consultation on various local, national, and regional issues.

Idaber urged the importance of fostering a spirit of nationalism, prioritizing dialogue, rejecting division, and coordinating with state institutions. He also encouraged the elders and tribal leaders to recognize and appreciate the state’s developmental efforts in the southern regions. As an example, he pointed out the elevation of the border region of In Guezzam to the status of a province and the transformation of Tin Zaouatine from a collection of tents into a district.
