ALGIERS- From desalinating seawater to laying electrical networks, from hydrocarbon piping to constructing buildings and roads, the Algerian state-owned group Cosider casts a wide net and ventures into a new frontier in Algeria: solar energy. Positioned to thrive and excel in a constantly evolving environment, the public company must adapt to new shifts to capitalize on opportunities in the Algerian market, particularly in solar energy, where the country has embarked on an ambitious program to generate 15 GW of solar power.
In line with this vision, the public group, renowned for its execution of large-scale projects, particularly in remote regions of the country, has secured two significant contracts to build photovoltaic solar power plants in partnership with the Italian company Fimer. Valued at nearly $300 million, these contracts aim to produce 400 MW of solar energy as part of the 3000 MW program.
The venture into solar power is strategic, as the company is already positioning itself in the Algerian market in these future-oriented fields, including installation, maintenance, and mastery of the solar energy industry. This positioning is facilitated by partnering with foreign actors with proven expertise in this domain, such as the Italian company Fimer, which boasts a global presence.
Given the strategic importance of the solar energy battle for Algeria, Cosider’s emergence as a player in this field will have a positive impact, both for the group, enabling it to shape its future in this domain, and for Algeria, which seeks to leverage local expertise in constructing large-scale infrastructure across various sectors, particularly solar energy.
In such large-scale programs, mastering the production chain through workforce training and improving integration rates are crucial for the national economy.
In this context, the group officially announced its foray into the field of photovoltaic solar energy last Monday, laying the foundation stone for its first 150 MW solar project in the province of Touggourt. This project aims to install over 244,000 photovoltaic panels across an area of over 300 hectares. The second project, part of a 1000 MW solar initiative valued at nearly $200 million, is set to launch soon, producing 250 MW of solar energy over 500 hectares.
These two projects mark just the beginning of Cosider’s journey into the realm of solar energy, with more projects anticipated, including Sonelgaz’s upcoming program to realize the remaining 12 GW of solar energy in the future. To strengthen its position in the Algerian solar energy market, Cosider has already commenced training its workforce in the installation and maintenance of photovoltaic panels.
