Algiers, Algeria | July 2nd 2024 — In a vibrant celebration of health and unity, the Embassy of India in Algeria commemorated the 10th International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2024, at the iconic Jardin d’Essai du Hamma in Algiers. This marks the third consecutive year that the embassy has hosted the International Day of Yoga at this prestigious location.

Proclamation and Theme
The United Nations, recognizing the universal appeal and benefits of Yoga, proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga on 11 December 2014. Since then, this day has been celebrated annually worldwide. The theme for this year, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores Yoga’s comprehensive benefits to both individual well-being and social harmony.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Yoga, an ancient practice with origins tracing back thousands of years, encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines. The word ‘Yoga’ derives from Sanskrit, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to unite,’ symbolizing the integration of body and consciousness. In recent years, Yoga has witnessed a surge in popularity across Algeria, attracting a diverse array of practitioners.
Event Proceedings
According to a communiqué from the embassy, the event commenced at 8:30 AM with an opening address by Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Vishwa Nath Goel, who highlighted the significance of Yoga in promoting holistic health and fostering global unity. Following his address, participants engaged in a guided Yoga session based on the Common Yoga Protocol. This session was expertly led by prominent Yoga instructors in Algeria, including Ms. Hayet Hamlaoui, Ms. Souheir Louahala, and Ms. Aida Merabet.
Distinguished Guests and Participants
The event drew a diverse group of Yoga enthusiasts, including Algerian dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, and notable public figures. Among the distinguished guests were Ms. Hassiba Boulmerka, an esteemed athlete specializing in middle-distance races; Mr. Abderrahmane Morceli, a former Olympian and middle-distance running specialist; Algerian actor Mr. Khaled Benaissa and his spouse, actress Ms. Samia Meziane; actress Ms. Souha Oulha; and social media influencer Ms. Hayet Dakou. Their participation underscored the broad appeal and inclusive nature of Yoga.
Culinary and Cultural Exchange
The celebration concluded with the serving of traditional vegetarian Indian refreshments, allowing participants to enjoy a taste of Indian cuisine and further fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange.
