ALGIERS- On the 21st of June, the Embassy of India in Algiers celebrated the 9th International Yoga Day with immense enthusiasm. The event took place at the stunning Hamma Gardens, with the iconic Martyr’s Monument serving as a picturesque backdrop. This marked the second time that the Embassy organized the International Day of Yoga at the Jardin d’essai du Hamma, solidifying its commitment to promoting the practice of yoga in Algeria.

The day commenced at 0830 hours with a heartfelt message from the Ambassador of India to Algeria, Mr. Gaurav Ahluwalia. Following the opening remarks, a guided yoga session based on the Common Yoga Protocol was conducted by the participants. Renowned yoga instructors in Algeria, Ms. Souheir Louahala and Ms. Hayet Hamlaoui, led the session along with other yoga volunteers. Nearly 200 individuals from all walks of life gathered to practice various yoga asanas (postures) from the Common Yoga Protocol for an hour.

The United Nations officially declared the 21st of June as the International Day of Yoga on the 11th of December, 2014. Since then, this day has been celebrated annually, bringing together people from all corners of the globe to commemorate the practice of yoga. The theme chosen for this year’s International Day of Yoga was “The World is One Family,” emphasizing the unifying nature of yoga and its ability to foster a sense of global unity and harmony.

Yoga has gained significant popularity in Algeria, attracting enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Notable individuals who graced the event with their presence included Salima Souakri, a renowned Algerian judo champion, and Souha Oulha, a prominent actress known for her work in movies and theater, particularly for her role in the series Eddama. Their participation highlighted the growing influence of yoga and its universal appeal.

As the yoga demonstration drew to a close, Ambassador Ahluwalia presented Certificates of Appreciation to the practitioners. The guest of honor, Salima Souakri, former Secretary of State to the Minister of Youth and Sports responsible for elite sports, was also recognized for her notable contributions. This gesture of appreciation served to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of those who actively promote and practice yoga in Algeria.

To conclude the event on a delightful note, vegetarian Indian refreshments were served, providing participants with a taste of the diverse culinary traditions associated with yoga’s country of origin.

Yoga, an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice, has its roots dating back thousands of years. Derived from Sanskrit, the word “Yoga” symbolizes the union of body and consciousness, emphasizing the holistic nature of this discipline.

The Embassy of India’s celebration of the 9th International Yoga Day in Algiers exemplified the growing popularity of yoga in Algeria and showcased its ability to bring people together. By embracing yoga, individuals from different backgrounds can connect on a deeper level, fostering a sense of unity, inner peace, and overall well-being. The event served as a testament to the transformative power of yoga and its potential to create a harmonious world where individuals recognize their shared humanity and work together for a brighter future.
