Algiers, Algeria | August 26th, 2024 — On August 8, 2024, the Embassy of India in Algeria, in partnership with the National Higher School of Agronomy (ENSA), held a pivotal environmental event to kick off the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. This initiative, inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 5, 2024, as part of World Environment Day, aims to plant 800 million trees by September 2024 and a staggering 1.4 billion trees by March 2025 across India. The campaign represents a collaborative effort between government bodies and civil society, with the goal of bolstering environmental sustainability and fostering a profound connection between individuals and nature.
The ceremony, held at ENSA in Algiers, commenced, as per a communiqué from the Indian embassy in Algeria, with a compelling speech by Chargé d’Affaires Vishwa Nath Goel. Goel articulated the campaign’s ambitious objectives and underscored the essential role of environmental stewardship. He encouraged the Algerian community to participate in planting trees as a tribute to mother earth, aligning with the campaign’s theme of honoring nature through collective action. In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, Goel signed the Golden Book of ENSA, reflecting the deepening bilateral ties between India and Algeria in their shared quest for environmental preservation.
Professor Hartani Tarik, Director of ENSA, highlighted the crucial intersection of environmental sustainability and agriculture. He expressed a keen interest in exploring potential collaborations between ENSA and Indian universities in the field of agricultural sciences. The dialogue focused on opportunities for knowledge exchange and joint research endeavors aimed at advancing agricultural practices and promoting sustainable farming techniques. The event also featured the ceremonial planting of a Cycas tree by representatives from the Indian Embassy, the Algerian government, and ENSA. This symbolic act underscored the event’s commitment to environmental issues and illustrated the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
The event concluded with a reception where attendees enjoyed a selection of Indian snacks, fostering further informal exchanges and strengthening the bonds of friendship between India and Algeria. Through this initiative, the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign not only enhances global environmental awareness but also sets the stage for future collaborations in sustainable development and agricultural innovation.
