Emir Abdelkader’s legacy lives on as symbol of hope, resilience for Algerian people

ALGIERS- The city of Oran is set to receive a magnificent tribute to Emir Abdelkader in the form of a giant stele, which will be the largest in the world. Standing at an impressive 42 meters high, this monument will be a sight to behold and a testament to the great leader’s legacy.

During an evaluation meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of the Interior, the Wali of Oran, Saïd Sayoud, announced that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, had given instructions for the realization of the stele. The wilaya has received the necessary funds for the construction of this monument and a museum, with completion expected before the end of 2024.

The stele will be equipped with a luminous sword that will indicate the direction of the Qibla (La Qaâba), and the horse will be supported by five pillars in reference to the five pillars of Islam. The total cost of the project is estimated at 120 billion centimes, a significant investment that reflects the importance of Emir Abdelkader’s contribution to the region.

This impressive monument will surpass the famous statue of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, which stands at 39 meters high. The stele will serve as a symbol of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Emir Abdelkader holds a special place in the hearts of Algerians. He is a global figure known for his asceticism, mysticism and promotion of peace. The Emir, born in September 1808 in the Mascara region of western Algeria, was recognised as a political and military leader who led a popular resistance against the French invasion of Algeria for fifteen years. He was distinguished as a statesperson who laid the foundations of modern Algerian statehood.

After his capture, he was exiled to Syria, where he dedicated himself to Sufism, philosophy, writing and poetry. He played a significant role in quelling sectarian tensions between Muslims and Christians in Syria. The Emir passed away in Damascus on 26 May, 1883, and his remains were repatriated to Algeria after gaining independence.

In conclusion, the construction of this giant stele is a significant milestone for the city of Oran and a fitting tribute to Emir Abdelkader’s legacy. The project is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving the country’s cultural heritage and promoting its unique identity on the global stage.
