Algiers, Algeria | December 25th, 2024 — On Monday, a vital training program aimed at strengthening the role of investigative journalism in tackling corruption was launched for Algerian journalists. This initiative, orchestrated by the High Authority for Transparency, Prevention, and the Fight Against Corruption in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and the National School of Journalism and Media Sciences, underscores the country’s commitment to reinforcing its transparency efforts.

The training session opened with an address from Mokhtar Khaldi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication, who spoke on behalf of Minister Mohamed Meziane. He emphasized the importance of the initiative in the broader context of implementing Algeria’s National Strategy for Transparency, Prevention, and the Fight Against Corruption. The initiative highlights the critical role of media in the national fight against corruption, positioning journalists as indispensable allies in exposing corrupt practices and promoting accountability.

Salima Mesrati, President of the High Authority for Transparency, Prevention, and the Fight Against Corruption, further elaborated on the significance of the training. She stressed that this program is not merely an academic exercise but a strategic step in strengthening investigative journalism across Algeria. It aims to bolster the skills of media professionals, enabling them to better engage with and investigate corruption-related issues.

“This initiative reflects a shared responsibility. Combating corruption is not just the task of governmental bodies; it requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the media,” Mesrati said. “Through investigative reporting, the media can help uncover illicit activities, hold perpetrators accountable, and raise public awareness about the detrimental effects of corruption on society.”

The training is a timely and critical intervention in an era when transparency and accountability are more crucial than ever. By equipping journalists with the necessary tools and knowledge to conduct thorough investigations, the program aims to enhance the capacity of Algeria’s media landscape to confront and expose corruption at all levels. The involvement of both media professionals and civil society in this process is seen as essential to the country’s long-term efforts to curb corruption.

The initiative also reflects the broader commitment of Algeria’s leadership to creating a more transparent and accountable governance system. By fostering a culture of openness and encouraging the media to play a proactive role in addressing corruption, the country is taking a significant step towards strengthening democratic governance and ensuring that those in power are held accountable.
