Algiers, Algeria | May 29, 2024 — Algeria and Mozambique are fortifying their bilateral relations through a dynamic cooperation in several key sectors, including hydrocarbons and industry. This collaborative effort was underscored during the working visit of Mozambique’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Ernesto Max Tonela, to Algeria on May 28 and 29. The visit, aimed at bolstering bilateral partnerships, carries significant importance for both nations.
During this visit, a pivotal meeting took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, bringing together Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, and his Mozambican counterpart, accompanied by a multisectoral delegation. The discussions focused on exploring cooperation opportunities in the energy and mining sectors.
This visit follows earlier bilateral discussions and provided an occasion to review the cooperation projects agreed upon during the Mozambican President’s visit to Algeria in late February this year. These developing projects span various areas, including plant protection, animal health, and the simplification of visa formalities, in addition to hydrocarbons and industry.
Hydrocarbons Sector Collaboration
In the hydrocarbons sector, Algeria emphasized its recognized expertise and commitment to supporting Mozambique by offering specialized training and sharing knowledge. This initiative aligns with Sonatrach’s ambitious strategy to enhance its global market presence. The Algerian delegation explored with their Mozambican counterparts the potential for collaboration in research, exploration, and exploitation of hydrocarbons, as well as in the development of gas and oil infrastructure.
Electricity Sector and Mining Cooperation
Furthermore, the two ministers identified promising opportunities for cooperation in the electricity sector, including production, transmission, and distribution. Algeria, known for its expertise in this field, pledged to support Mozambique in strengthening its electrical infrastructure to meet its growing energy demands. Additionally, mining and mineral resources were highlighted as fundamental elements of economic development for both nations. Exchanges of experiences and best practices are planned to stimulate economic growth and encourage job creation in this strategic sector.
Pharmaceutical Industry and Broader Industrial Cooperation
The Mozambican delegation, led by Minister Tonela, also met with Ali Aoun, Algeria’s Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production. The discussions centered on potential cooperation across various sectors, particularly the pharmaceutical industry. Both parties agreed to establish a dedicated task force to identify and develop areas of cooperation between the two countries.
This visit marks a significant step towards a reinforced partnership between Algeria and Mozambique, with concrete projects aimed at promoting economic development and enhancing infrastructure in both nations. The ongoing cooperation and shared expertise underscore the commitment of both countries to mutual growth and prosperity.
