ALGIERS- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, met on Sunday with a delegation from the World Bank (WB) led by Sayyed Tauqeer Hussain Shah. During the meeting, they discussed ways to develop and strengthen bilateral cooperation through the exchange of expertise and technical support, according to a statement from the ministry.
“The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of central executives, allowed both parties to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation, particularly in terms of exchanging expertise and technical support for ongoing and future projects related to the development of renewable energies,” the statement said. “Both parties highlighted Algeria’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as various projects in the sector.”
During the meeting, Mr. Arkab presented the main axes of the sector’s development program and the new regulatory frameworks governing hydrocarbon and mining activities, which offer several investment advantages and facilitations. He also emphasized the efforts made to diversify the national economy and implement reforms outlined in the Government’s Action Plan.
The minister highlighted measures to strengthen economic growth and the sector’s role in meeting local electricity, gas, and petroleum product needs while ensuring the country’s long-term energy coverage through large-scale electricity production and transfer projects.
Mr. Arkab also underscored the sector’s contribution to global and regional energy security, particularly in terms of regularity, stability, and reliability in gas exports. He mentioned projects to increase production capacities, develop manufacturing industries like petrochemicals, and enhance gas recovery rates to reduce emissions and flaring in the oil and gas industry to decrease carbon footprint.
Additionally, the minister praised the development plans for the mining sector and the local transformation of mineral resources through launched structural projects, including the Gara Djebilet iron ore project, integrated phosphate project, zinc and lead exploitation project, and others to obtain raw materials for various manufacturing industries.
Mr. Arkab also recalled various sector projects related to seawater desalination and mechanisms for achieving a flexible energy transition through the development of new and renewable energies.
Mr. Shah expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, which provided him with insights into the development prospects of the energy and mining sectors in Algeria, particularly regarding energy source diversification and mining sector development programs. He praised the alignment of views between Algeria and the WB, especially concerning energy security and carbon footprint reduction, concluded the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
