ALGIERS-The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, conducted an inspection visit to the Fouka 2 seawater desalination plant project in the Tipaza province on Saturday.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune laid the project’s foundation stone on July 5 during a working and inspection visit to the provinces of Algiers, Boumerdès, and Tipaza, celebrating the 61st anniversary of Independence and Youth Day.

Accompanied by the CEOs of Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, the Algerian Energy Company, and Cosider Canalisations (responsible for the project), the minister stressed the importance of accelerating the pace of work and adhering to the contractual deadlines for project delivery. The Fouka 2 project aims to enhance water security for approximately 3 million citizens.

Minister Arkab expressed the readiness of his department’s services to support all ongoing seawater desalination projects to overcome any obstacles. The Fouka 2 desalination station, spanning over 7 hectares, will secure the drinking water supply for residents in the western part of the capital, Tipaza province, and part of Blida province, meeting the needs of around 3 million people.

This project is part of an additional program under the emergency plan approved by the President, envisioning the construction of five desalination stations in the provinces of Oran, Béjaïa, El Tarf, Boumerdès, and Tipaza, each with a capacity of 300,000 m3/day.

During the visit, the minister also inspected the Fouka 1 seawater desalination station, which produces 120,000 cubic meters per day.
