Algiers, Algeria | January 24th, 2025 — Sonelgaz, the Algerian national energy group, is intensifying its cooperation with several African nations to advance the energy sector. On Thursday, January 23, 2025, Mourad Adjal, the CEO of Sonelgaz, welcomed a delegation from Burkina Faso’s National Electricity Company (Sonabel) and held crucial discussions with Fati Abarchi, the General Director of Niger’s National Electricity Company (NIGELEC).

During the meeting with the Burkinabè delegation, which took place at Sonelgaz’s headquarters in Algiers, Adjal emphasized the group’s readiness to support the energy development in Burkina Faso. He underscored the significance of transferring Sonelgaz’s expertise, highlighting its long-standing role as a pioneer in the energy sector. The CEO further showcased the company’s diversified capabilities, which span electricity production, transmission, distribution, engineering, maintenance, and training.

The Sonabel representative expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality extended to the delegation and acknowledged the immense value of Sonelgaz’s expertise, particularly in energy transmission and electrical system management.

In a significant move to strengthen its regional influence, Sonelgaz also announced plans to dispatch a team of specialists and senior executives to Niger. This mission aims to craft a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NIGELEC. The decision follows a productive virtual meeting between Adjal and Abarchi, attended by several senior officials from both countries. This initiative aligns with the recommendations of both Algeria and Niger’s high authorities, following the visit of Niger’s Prime Minister and Minister of Finance to Algeria last August, and the reciprocal visit by Algeria’s Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab to Niger.

The discussions also involved presenting Sonelgaz’s technical expertise in power generation, transmission, distribution, engineering, maintenance, and training. Adjal highlighted Sonelgaz’s willingness to explore investment opportunities in Niger, initially proposing to study a potential project for establishing a local power plant. He emphasized that Sonelgaz is prepared to send a specialized team to the ground to begin the feasibility study for this project and remains open to various forms of cooperation, especially in renewable energy and training.

Abarchi expressed strong interest in collaborating with Sonelgaz, recognizing the company’s leadership in the region and its extensive experience across multiple energy sectors. She conveyed her desire to formalize this cooperation to ensure mutual benefits for all parties involved.

An agreement has been reached to send a team of specialists to Niger, paving the way for the arrival of a high-level delegation led by Adjal. This mission will explore ways to expand the partnership between Sonelgaz and NIGELEC, aligning with the aspirations of both nations to enhance energy infrastructure and foster sustainable development.
