Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2024 — Minister of Communication Mohamed Laagab emphasized, on Tuesday in Algiers, the pivotal role of journalist training in economic domains. Laagab stressed the necessity for journalists to achieve a level of precision, mastery, comprehension, and capability to convey intricate concepts to the public.
At the inauguration of a training session titled “Economic Journalism and Data Analysis,” led by Hatem Ghandir, head of the economic section at the Qatari channel “Al Jazeera,” Minister Laagab highlighted the importance of such training in improving the treatment of economic data by national media outlets.
Laagab noted that media often disseminate economic figures without adequate analysis, underscoring the significance of simplifying concepts for the audience. He emphasized the essential need for journalists to possess a deep understanding of the subjects they cover.
Distinguishing economic journalism from other forms of reporting, Laagab expressed disappointment in the Algerian press’s handling of economic data. He commended Mr. Ghandir’s expertise in economic journalism and the valuable knowledge he would impart to participating journalists from both public and private national media outlets.
During the session, attended by 60 journalists, Mr. Ghandir elucidated techniques for simplifying financial and business reports, while also highlighting the differentiation between general news and economic information, particularly concerning data interpretation.
The proliferation of data worldwide has transformed journalistic practices, with contemporary reporting striving to present all facets of information succinctly and comprehensively within a single narrative, diverging from the traditional approach of incremental disclosure.
Focused on enhancing skills in managing economic data, the training session also provided insights into Mr. Ghandir’s esteemed career in economic journalism, promising to enhance the quality of economic reporting in Algerian media.
