Algiers- Algeria, May 15, 2024 – Eni has released its voluntary sustainability report titled “Eni for 2023 – A Just Transition,” outlining the company’s progress in advancing towards a just energy transition and its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Claudio Descalzi, Eni’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the need to address emerging socio-political, climate, and energy challenges with an approach focused on security, innovation, and sustainability. He stated, “Energy remains a crucial junction, providing a sense of security and opportunities for development. The energy transition is irreversible, and we must ensure its realization without sacrificing the production system and social sustainability.”
Eni intensified its focus on decarbonization as a core aspect of its business strategy, aiming to offer progressively decarbonized products and services. Through an industrial transformation plan, Eni targets achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with clear intermediate goals by 2025.
The company has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint, with major investments in research and development leading to a 40% reduction in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the Upstream sector and a 30% reduction in overall emissions compared to 2018. Methane emissions in the Upstream business decreased by over 20% by 2023, earning recognition from the ‘Gold Standard’ under the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 program initiated by UNEP.
Strategic collaborations with international partners like Sonatrach in Algeria, EGAS in Egypt, and ADNOC in the UAE have been formed to address the challenges of the energy transition.
Aligned with the COP28 agreement, Eni emphasizes a fair, orderly, and just energy transition, with investments to reduce emissions from Oil and Gas production, expand the gas portfolio, and increase investments in renewables. Eni has acquired Neptune Energy and initiated production from the Congo LNG project, while expanding its renewables sector with Plenitude’s 3 GW of installed capacity. Initiatives like Enilive and increased biorefining capacity for sustainable mobility are also underway. Eni is accelerating investment in magnetic confinement fusion for zero-emission energy generation.
Eni’s commitment to a just transition is evident in projects aimed at managing social impacts, maximizing local development opportunities, and working in partnership with communities while respecting human rights and the environment. Initiatives such as the conversion of the Livorno refinery into a biorefinery and the Oyo Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the Congo highlight Eni’s dedication to an inclusive transition. Partnerships with organizations like the ILO and IRENA underscore Eni’s commitment to sustainable development and skills promotion for the transition.
