Algiers, Algeria | December 31st, 2024 — In an effort to ensure that essential goods remain plentiful and affordable during the holy month of Ramadan, Tayeb Zitouni, Algeria’s Minister of Internal Trade and Market Regulation, has announced a series of robust measures aimed at stabilizing the supply chain and controlling prices. Speaking during his visit to Béchar on Monday, Minister Zitouni emphasized the importance of reinforcing distribution networks across the country, particularly in the seven southwestern provinces, which collectively have a population exceeding one million.
The measures are designed to address the surge in demand for staple foods throughout Ramadan, especially in the southern regions where logistical challenges can make it more difficult to meet consumer needs. Minister Zitouni underscored that efforts to ramp up local production within regional factories are key to ensuring sufficient availability during the peak of the fasting month.
During his tour of the “Agridiff” public sector group’s semolina and flour milling plant in the Béchar industrial zone, Zitouni highlighted the facility’s daily production capacity of 1,200 quintals, including 700 quintals of semolina and 300 quintals of bran. The plant also produces 2,000 quintals of flour products, including 800 quintals of flour and 200 quintals of bran. The government has urged this and similar plants to increase production and streamline distribution channels to ensure a steady supply of essential goods, such as semolina and flour, across the country during Ramadan.
The Minister also visited the “Saoura” cement factory, operated by the public group “Gica,” which produces over one million tons of cement annually. Zitouni emphasized the ongoing need for high-quality cement production to strengthen the domestic market and increase Algeria’s export capabilities, particularly through the new road corridor that connects Algeria to Mauritania and broader Africa.
In his visit to the mineral water production unit in the border town of Mougheul, Zitouni noted the unit’s impressive daily output of 13,000 bottles. He stressed the significance of the sector in boosting Algeria’s economy while providing jobs for local populations. He further reinforced the importance of maintaining strict quality standards to stabilize prices and ensure market satisfaction during Ramadan.
Minister Zitouni concluded his visit with a meeting with regional economic operators, where he discussed strategies to enhance export activities and promote commercial activity in the Béchar province. He reiterated the government’s support for developing cross-border trade, taking full advantage of the region’s strategic geographical position as a gateway to African markets.
