ALGIERS- During the holy month of Ramadan, nearly 31 million cubic meters of drinking water were produced to meet the needs of residents in the wilayas of Algiers and Tipasa, as reported by the Algiers and Tipaza Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) on Sunday.
SEAAL’s report highlighted its commitment to ensuring a continuous supply of water resources throughout Ramadan, resulting in the production of nearly 31 million cubic meters of drinking water. The production rate averaged 865,000 cubic meters per day for the Algiers wilaya and 176,000 cubic meters per day for the Tipasa wilaya since the beginning of 2024.
Despite increased water demand during Ramadan, SEAAL successfully maintained its distribution program, making slight adjustments in regions with sufficient storage facilities to enhance distribution. The distribution program aimed to supply water to 60% of Algiers municipalities daily during Ramadan, increasing to 80% in the days leading up to Eid al-Fitr and during the festival days.
Operational teams responsible for distribution ensured continuous monitoring of water supply schedules and periods, 24/7, to maintain sufficient pressure and flow. At least 30 pressure and flow tests were conducted daily in various operational centers.
As part of proactive measures, SEAAL’s operational centers conducted 118 operations to develop artesian wells, with 61 in Algiers and 54 in Tipasa. Additionally, 22 repair operations were carried out on major water transfer systems to ensure regular supply to consumers during the month. The company also repaired water leaks in the Isser-Keddara system through strategic interventions across structures and networks in Algiers and Tipasa, fixing 32 leaks in major water transfer systems.
During Ramadan, SEAAL mobilized 38 intervention teams to inspect and maintain various water distribution channels covering a total of 6,653 km. This led to a rapid intervention rate, repairing approximately 66 leaks daily and a total of 5,941 leaks since the beginning of 2024, including 1,895 leaks repaired during Ramadan in the Algiers and Tipasa wilayas.
Regarding water quality monitoring, SEAAL’s central laboratory and operational directorates conducted over 19,000 physicochemical analyses and more than 4,400 bacteriological analyses at production centers, storage facilities, and customer sites during the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, 42,000 chlorine tests were conducted in the field to ensure compliance with current standards.
SEAAL emphasized its commitment to ensuring the quality of produced and distributed water, with strict control by its central laboratory accredited by the Algerian Accreditation Body (ALGERAC).
To address customer concerns promptly and efficiently, the company intensified its efforts in responsiveness through its operational call center and active presence on social media platforms. SEAAL also mentioned acts of vandalism affecting 17 artesian wells during last Ramadan, resulting in a deficit of 15,269 cubic meters per day, and action taken to restore affected wells and ensure service continuity.
