Algiers, April 26, 2024 – Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, the Minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups, and Micro-enterprises, announced on Thursday that the National Agency for Entrepreneurship Support and Development (NESDA) financed nearly 9,900 projects in 2023.
The Minister emphasized that his ministry decided not to accept new applications through the agency to review all pending applications and to move towards adopting new mechanisms and selection and financing conditions for projects, particularly through the restructuring of the project selection committee.
Towards a “Strictly Economic” Approach
The Minister explained that the agency’s new strategy is based on examining applications in a “strictly economic” manner rather than administrative, shifting from a culture of quantity to a culture of quality by investing in real entrepreneurs. This will be achieved through the adoption of a scoring grid allowing for objective project financing, the Minister specified.
He revealed that “the agency will be internally restructured” to align its organization with financial institutions and banks, aiming to transform it into a structure responsible for market analysis, portfolio management, and project monitoring.
A Second Chance for Beneficiaries of the Previous ANSEJ Program
Regarding the non-performing loans granted to young people by national banks under the previous program (ANSEJ), the Minister indicated that they would be rescheduled with the intervention of the General Directorate of the Treasury.
In this regard, El Mahdi Oualid emphasized that rescheduling represents “a second chance” for these young people as well as for the agency to address this issue that has “weighed on it.”
The initiatives outlined by the Minister demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the quality and effectiveness of entrepreneurship support in Algeria, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to drive genuine economic development and provide opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.
