European Parliament Hosts International Conference on Western Sahara: A Call for Justice and Self-Determination

Algiers, Algeria | December 9th, 2024 — The European Parliament is hosting an international conference on Western Sahara, commencing Monday, under the theme “The International Conference of Legal Experts for Western Sahara.” This two-day event aims to shed light on critical issues, including the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, the application of international law in the region, and the broader human rights and resource-related challenges.

A Collaborative Effort for Western Sahara’s Cause

Organized by the Association of Legal Experts for Western Sahara in collaboration with members of the European Parliament and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s (SADR) representation in Europe, the conference seeks to consolidate international solidarity for the Sahrawi struggle. The event will feature contributions from lawmakers, human rights defenders, political figures, and activists from the occupied territories, fostering an inclusive dialogue on the path forward.

Key Themes: Human Rights, Natural Resources, and Legal Strategies

The conference agenda encompasses critical themes, notably the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination, the enforcement of international legal frameworks in Western Sahara, and the current state of human rights in the occupied territories. A major focus will be on the exploitation of natural resources, a topic brought to the forefront by the European Court of Justice’s landmark rulings on October 4, which emphasized the legal rights of the Sahrawi people over their land and resources.

Ambassador Mansour Omar, SADR’s representative to Europe and EU institutions, emphasized the strategic objectives of the conference. “This initiative aims to mobilize greater support for the Sahrawi people’s just struggle, coordinate legal and political efforts among allies, and confront the defiance of European states against international law and judicial rulings,” he stated.

Mansour highlighted the recent legal victories of the Polisario Front, asserting, “The Polisario Front has decisively challenged Morocco and its allies through its legal triumphs. The Sahrawi people’s rights are non-negotiable, and we will continue to leverage every legal and diplomatic opportunity to enforce respect for their rights and safeguard their interests.”

In addition to legal discussions, the conference will address the deteriorating human rights conditions in the occupied territories, where Sahrawi activists face systematic repression. Participants aim to amplify international awareness of these violations and advocate for stronger measures to hold perpetrators accountable.

This high-profile event underscores the unwavering determination of the Sahrawi people and their supporters to achieve justice and sovereignty.
