Algiers, Algeria | February 10th, 2025 — Dominique de Villepin, former French Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, stands among the few dissenting voices in France pushing back against the rising wave of anti-Algerian sentiment propagated by far-right factions in both political institutions and media. In an exclusive interview with AL24 News, De Villepin underscored the urgency of steering Franco-Algerian relations away from confrontation and towards constructive engagement.
A Crisis of Unprecedented Magnitude
Amid escalating diplomatic tensions, De Villepin acknowledged that the two nations are currently facing what he described as “perhaps the most significant crisis of the past decades.” However, he remains optimistic about the potential for resolution. “We do not have the right to be discouraged or to allow stagnation. We must push forward, and that imperative must guide us,” he asserted, expressing confidence that “things will move in the right direction in the coming weeks.”
His remarks come at a time when far-right rhetoric in France is fueling a campaign of hostility against Algeria and its citizens, attempting to reshape the historical and political narrative. De Villepin, along with other intellectuals and political figures, is striving to counter this discourse by reaffirming historical truths and advocating for diplomatic prudence.
A Strong Desire for Solutions
Drawing on his discussions with political and economic leaders in France, De Villepin revealed a palpable “expectation and strong hope to reach solutions.” He noted that both sides recognize the necessity of overcoming their differences and reestablishing open channels for dialogue and cooperation.
“I know that each party is ready to take its share of responsibility. We are all prepared to work towards overcoming the current discord and restoring a constructive partnership,” he emphasized. He called for swift action to “take a decisive step forward, work towards reconciliation, and set common ideals and objectives.”
Referring to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent interview with the French daily L’Opinion, De Villepin observed, “I have read President Tebboune’s statements carefully, and I see that movement is underway. I would like to believe that this movement is in the right direction.” He added, “Let us ensure that we emerge from this crisis with dignity and progress.”
Historical Reckoning: A Necessary Step for Reconciliation
When questioned about France’s duty to acknowledge its colonial past and whether it should take further steps—potentially including an official apology—De Villepin acknowledged the progress made in recent years. “Much has been accomplished under the current French presidency, which has sought to recognize key historical figures and events of deep symbolic significance,” he said.
However, he stressed that the process of historical recognition is not yet complete. “I believe we must fully embrace this acknowledgment of history. The moment is approaching when we will need to take this step,” he affirmed.
He further highlighted that both President Tebboune and the Algerian leadership are fully aware of the importance of this step. “It must be done in sync with the rhythm of memory and the sentiments of both peoples,” he remarked.
A Call for Unity and Mutual Recognition
For De Villepin, the priority now is to move beyond divisive rhetoric and focus on what unites the two nations. “There is a moment when all this comes to fruition,” he explained, adding that “this dynamic must once again take precedence.”
He warned against allowing political divergences to drive a deeper wedge between the French and Algerian peoples. “We must put aside what separates us and instead focus on the essential task—bringing our two nations together again,” he urged.
Highlighting France’s responsibility in this regard, De Villepin declared, “The work of recognition is something we French must undertake. We must be aware of what we owe to each other and of the immense possibilities we can achieve together.”
Western Sahara: France’s Policy Shift Sparks Algerian Outrage
Addressing France’s recent policy shift on the Western Sahara issue, De Villepin acknowledged the frustration expressed by Algeria. “I fully understand the incomprehension of the Algerian authorities and the Algerian people regarding France’s stance on this matter,” he admitted.
