ALGIERS- During a hearing before the National Defense Committee of the People’s National Assembly (APN) on Thursday in Algiers, Minister of Hydraulics Taha Derbal revealed plans for the construction of seven new seawater desalination stations in Algeria between 2025 and 2030. This announcement comes in addition to the ongoing development of five desalination stations in Oran, Tipasa, Boumerdes, Bejaia, and El Tarf.

Minister Derbal highlighted that the ongoing projects are progressing rapidly, with completion expected by the end of 2024. Once operational, these stations will significantly increase the proportion of desalinated seawater in Algeria’s total potable water supply, rising from the current 18% to 42%.

The new desalination stations, to be located in Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Tizi Ouzou (2 stations), Chlef, Jijel, and Skikda, aim to ensure a stable water supply for coastal regions and areas located within 150 kilometers of these facilities. Minister Derbal emphasized the strategic importance of desalination, especially amidst changing climatic conditions that have led to reduced rainfall.

Furthermore, Minister Derbal underscored the importance of utilizing treated wastewater from purification plants, ranking it as the fourth-largest water source in Algeria. He emphasized the need to explore opportunities for reusing treated wastewater in both industrial and agricultural sectors, particularly given agriculture’s substantial water consumption.

Algeria’s commitment to enhancing water security extends beyond desalination projects. Minister Derbal highlighted a national plan to achieve a 60% reuse rate of treated wastewater in agriculture and industry, aligning with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of Algerian public enterprises in executing these projects, Minister Derbal emphasized the nation’s strides in mastering desalination technology. He stressed the importance of empowering local expertise and promoting national sovereignty in water security initiatives.

In conclusion, the president of the ad-hoc committee commended Algeria’s proactive measures to address water scarcity, including drilling wells and implementing large-scale desalination programs. These efforts underscore Algeria’s commitment to ensuring water security and sustainable development for its citizens.
