Algiers, Algeria | December 1st, 2024 — Boualem Sansal, a name often shrouded in controversy, has long been a figure of polarizing debate in Algeria and beyond. Born in Tissemsilt in 1949, Sansal ascended to prominent administrative positions, including serving as the Director General of Industry within Algeria’s Ministries of Trade and Industry. However, his career trajectory and ideological affiliations paint a troubling portrait of betrayal, particularly given his alignment with foreign powers and narratives hostile to Algeria’s sovereignty and identity.
Sansal’s public statements and actions have repeatedly drawn criticism for undermining Algeria’s revolutionary legacy and national integrity. Among his most inflammatory claims is the assertion that only 20% of Algerians supported the War of Liberation against French colonial rule—an outrageous distortion of history that dishonors the sacrifices of millions who fought for independence. His disdain extends further, as he has openly lamented the transformation of colonial-era churches into mosques, describing Islam as a “looming threat” to Europe and a “flood” that must be contained. These remarks reveal a deep alignment with anti-Islamic and anti-Algerian sentiments, raising questions about his motivations and loyalties.
Sansal’s ties to France and the Zionist lobby are well-documented. After facing professional accountability in Algeria for unauthorized travels and dubious explanations of his absences, he relocated to France, where he was embraced as an intellectual voice. This reception, however, is widely perceived as less about his literary contributions and more about his utility in promoting narratives critical of Algeria. His writings, which often echo French colonial nostalgia and Zionist rhetoric, have earned him accolades in France and support from influential political figures, including former Presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy.
Notably, Sansal has been an outspoken advocate for Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara, a stance that starkly contrasts with Algeria’s long-standing support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. His description of Western Sahara as a “creation of Algeria” reflects not only a denial of historical and political realities but also a blatant alignment with Morocco’s territorial ambitions.
The culmination of his divisive rhetoric and actions underscores a broader agenda aimed at discrediting Algeria and its revolutionary history. Sansal’s participation in high-profile events, such as a state dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Algeria, further highlights the tacit endorsement he enjoys from foreign powers seeking to exert influence over Algerian affairs.
In light of these developments, Boualem Sansal represents more than an individual betrayal; he symbolizes the enduring struggle against external attempts to undermine Algeria’s sovereignty. His statements and actions serve as a stark reminder of the vigilance required to protect Algeria’s historical narrative, national integrity, and cultural identity from those who seek to distort them for personal or political gain.
Algeria’s legacy, forged in the crucible of resistance and liberation, stands resilient against such betrayals. While Sansal may find support in foreign halls, his actions have only solidified his disrepute among Algerians, who continue to cherish and uphold the values of independence and unity that define their nation.
