ALGIERS – The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has issued a statement expressing regret and disappointment regarding the disappointing performance of the national team in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Ivory Coast. The below-par results led to a series of measures aimed at rectifying the situation, including the termination of the contract of the national team coach, Djamel Belmadi.
The less-than-glorious journey of the Algerian national team in CAN 2023 raised legitimate concerns within the FAF and the Algerian population. Despite the resources and material conditions provided by the state and the FAF, the national team failed to meet expectations, finishing at the bottom of its group for the second consecutive time, following a similar performance in CAN 2021. This failure added to the disappointment of not qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, further fueling frustrations among Algerian football fans and officials.
The meeting between FAF President Walid Sadi and Djamel Belmadi in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, marked a decisive turning point. Faced with the glaring failure of the national team, a mutual agreement to amicably terminate Belmadi’s contract was considered. However, despite the initial agreement, Belmadi expressed reservations, particularly regarding the financial aspects of the agreement, thus delaying the formalization of the termination.
Belmadi’s attitude, leaving the country without providing a definitive response, was perceived as a tacit refusal of the proposed agreement by the FAF. This situation compelled the FAF to take decisive measures to turn the page and focus on the future of Algerian football. Therefore, the termination of Djamel Belmadi’s contract was announced, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the national team.
