ALGIERS- As the search for the national team coach continues after Djamel Belmadi’s departure, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is considering Portuguese options. Carlos Queiroz, the former coach of the Qatari national team, is said to be a priority for Algerian football officials. Queiroz, who was close to taking charge of the Algerian national team before Belmadi’s appointment, is currently available after leaving his position with the Qatari team just weeks before the start of the 2024 Asian Cup.
The FAF seems inclined towards the Portuguese coaching school to fill the vacancy left by Belmadi. The federation recently announced, in a statement, the initiation of talks to find a new national team coach after failing to reach a definitive agreement on the termination of Belmadi’s contract. While Queiroz is a leading candidate, another Portuguese coach, José Peseiro, has also attracted the attention of Algerian football authorities.
Peseiro, who guided the Nigerian national team to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is a serious contender for the coaching position. The FAF has been in contact with Peseiro, and he has indicated his willingness to lead the Algerian team. However, Peseiro has expressed the need to wait until the conclusion of AFCON and his commitments with the Nigerian team before formally engaging in negotiations with the Algerian football authorities.
Having achieved positive results with the Super Eagles at AFCON 2024, where the team remains unbeaten with one draw and four victories, Peseiro is currently preparing the Nigerian team for the semi-final against South Africa. The Portuguese coach, with nearly two years of experience with the Super Eagles, has had a successful coaching career in clubs, including managing FC Porto and Sporting Portugal. He also worked as an assistant coach alongside Carlos Queiroz during their time at Real Madrid in 2003-2004.
The FAF aims to finalize the selection of the new coach before mid-February, allowing sufficient time to prepare for the FIFA tournament scheduled for March. Algeria is set to host the tournament, featuring the participation of three other nations: South Africa, Bolivia, and Andorra. The new coach will have the opportunity to assemble the squad for this international event.
