FAF Receives Four State-of-the-Art VAR Vans to Enhance Football Transparency, Modernize National Officiating

Algiers, Algeria | January 24th, 2025 — The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced the successful delivery of four fully equipped VAR (Video Assistant Referee) vans on Thursday, marking a significant leap towards modernizing football officiating in the country. This new acquisition is set to play a crucial role in ensuring the fairness and transparency of upcoming matches across various Algerian competitions, including the prestigious Ligue 1 Mobilis.

Each van is fitted with a comprehensive VAR system, featuring high-definition cameras, real-time data storage servers, video processing software, instant playback and recording systems, and other cutting-edge equipment necessary for the efficient implementation of the VAR system. This technology guarantees optimal performance and maximum reliability, providing officials with the tools needed to make accurate and fair decisions.

The acquisition follows a national and international call for tenders launched by the FAF in March 2024, aiming to secure the technology for the 2024-2025 Ligue 1 Mobilis season. In a statement released by the federation, President Walid Sadi expressed the FAF’s pride in this important step forward for Algerian football, emphasizing that the new VAR vans will enhance the credibility and transparency of the country’s competitions. “We are confident that these VAR vans will play a pivotal role in ensuring fairness in our games. We are grateful to FIFA for their support and trust in this project,” stated Sadi.

In addition to the four VAR vans, the FAF has also acquired a fixed training station equipped with all necessary training materials, including cameras, screens, video processing software, and communication systems, to support the professional development of referees and VAR staff. This training station will serve as a critical tool for educating officials on the use of VAR technology and ensuring smooth integration into Algerian football.

The timing of this acquisition is particularly significant, coming just two months before the quarter-finals of the African club competitions, where three Algerian teams—MC Alger in the CAF Champions League and USM Alger and CS Constantine in the CAF Confederation Cup—are still in contention. As mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), VAR will be implemented starting from the quarter-finals of these tournaments. Furthermore, the FAF has confirmed that the VAR system will also be utilized from the quarter-finals of the Algerian Cup, solidifying its commitment to fairness and transparency at all levels of the game.
