ALGIERS- In a strategic move orchestrated by the adeptness of the Head of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) Walid Sadi, along with the national team’s coach Djamel Belmadi, the Algerian national football team is gearing up for the upcoming CAN 2023 with a robust training program. While Guinea Equatorial and Senegal were initially considered as potential locations for the team’s preparations, the decision has been made to hold the training camp in Togo. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has unveiled details about the pre-competition stage set to take place from January 13 to February 11 in Côte d’Ivoire, marking a notable shift as it’s the first time the squad will prepare for a major tournament on the African continent.
The training regimen kicks off on December 25, with the team assembling at the National Technical Center (CTN) in Sidi Moussa, Algeria. Coach Djamel Belmadi, known for his meticulous planning, will oversee the squad’s initial preparations at home before heading to Lomé on January 1 for an intensive training camp until January 10, 2024, as outlined by the FAF on its official website.
In a noteworthy addition, the FAF revealed that during their stay in Togo, the national team will engage in two friendly matches. The first match is scheduled against the Togolese side on Friday, January 5, followed by a second encounter against Burundi on Tuesday, January 9. It’s worth mentioning that Burundi served as a sparring partner for the Algerian team before the triumphant CAN 2019 campaign.
The team’s journey will continue as they fly to Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, on January 10, gearing up for their debut in Group D on January 15 against Angola at the Stade de la Paix at 8:00 PM local time.
As a reminder, the “Desert Foxes” will compete in Group D alongside Burkina Faso, Angola, and Mauritania. The primary objective is to surpass the accomplishments of the disappointing CAN 2021 campaign in Cameroon, where the defending champions faced an unexpected early exit. Coach Belmadi and his squad are determined to erase the memories of that setback and make a resounding impact in the upcoming tournament.
