Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2024 — The June training camp, dedicated to the 3rd and 4th rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, is now coming to an end for the national team. This gathering has sparked interest among Algerian football observers, particularly due to the absence of key players like Riyad Mahrez. On this matter, the president of the Algerian Football Association (FAF), Walid Sadi, wished to provide some clarifications.
Speaking to the Algerian press after Algeria’s victory against Uganda (1-2) at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala City, Walid Sadi addressed various aspects of the training camp. While emphasizing that Vladimir Petkovic has ample time to build his team and relying on the support of the fans, the FAF chief also discussed Riyad Mahrez’s situation.
The exclusion of the former Manchester City winger has been one of the most debated topics in Algerian football circles in recent weeks, attributed to a “misunderstanding” between him and coach Vladimir Petkovic. Rumors of tension between the two men quickly spread, but Sadi was keen to refute them, revealing that the 60-year-old coach plans to meet with Mahrez in the coming days to clarify the situation.
“There is no issue with Riyad Mahrez; the story simply got blown out of proportion. I have spoken with the coach (Petkovic) since our arrival in Uganda, and he assured me that he would meet with Mahrez in the coming days to clear up this matter. It is even possible that Mahrez will make his return to the national team during the next training camp in September,” stated Walid Sadi.
