Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2024 — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has lauded Algeria for its substantial progress in the aquaculture sector, a development attributed to years of technical assistance provided by the organization.

Technical Assistance and Economic Diversification

In a recent report, the FAO highlighted Algeria’s advancements in aquatic animal production, particularly in the Ouargla district, where several fish farms have been established in the desert, boasting an annual production capacity of 2,000 tons. The FAO’s support over the past decade has facilitated the implementation of integrated aquaculture projects, which are poised to enhance agricultural productivity by reducing fertilizer needs and improving crop yields by over 30%. The Algerian Ministry of Fisheries has identified more than 100,000 irrigation basins suitable for these integrated activities, significantly cutting fertilizer costs.

To further bolster this sector, the Algerian government has introduced a subsidy of 50,000 dinars per ton of tilapia production since January, demonstrating a strong commitment to economic diversification through aquaculture.

Marine and Continental Aquaculture Projects

Algeria’s marine aquaculture has a potential annual production capacity of 120,000 tons, although current output is between 6,000 and 7,000 tons. The Ministry of Fisheries has registered nearly 200 aquaculture projects, with 70 actively underway, leading to an increase in marine aquaculture production from 3,000 tons in 2022 to 6,000 tons today. The government’s goal is to double this output by 2030, aiming for 100,000 tons annually.

Global Aquaculture Trends

The FAO’s report, “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture,” reveals that global aquaculture production, for the first time, has exceeded capture fisheries. In 2022, aquatic animal production reached 223.2 million tons, a 4.4% increase from 2020. This milestone underscores the growing importance of aquaculture in meeting global food demands.

Emphasis on Sustainability

While celebrating these achievements, the FAO underscores the necessity for continued adaptive and transformative measures to improve the efficiency, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability of aquatic food systems. These measures are vital for addressing food insecurity, reducing poverty, and ensuring sustainable governance of aquatic resources.

Future Prospects

The successful partnership between Algeria and the FAO serves as a model of how technical assistance and government support can drive significant progress in aquaculture. The ongoing and planned projects are expected to elevate Algeria’s status in the global aquaculture sector, contributing to the nation’s economic diversification and sustainable development.

Through strategic investments and innovative projects, Algeria is positioning itself as a leader in aquaculture, setting the stage for a robust and sustainable future in aquatic food production.
