Federation of Moroccan Associations in the Netherlands Expresses Deep Discontent Over What It Terms “Recent Anti-Semitic Incidents”

Algiers, Algeria | November 09th, 2024 — The Moroccan Federation of Associations in the Netherlands expressed “deep outrage” over what it described as recent “anti-Semitic incidents” that occurred in Amsterdam. This reaction comes in the wake of clashes on Thursday evening between members of various Arab communities, including Moroccans, and supporters of the Zionist entity’s Maccabi Tel Aviv football club following a Europa League match between Maccabi and the local club Ajax.

In a strongly worded statement, the Federation condemned the incidents “with the utmost firmness” and reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to tolerance and peaceful coexistence within Dutch society. “We have always maintained relations based on respect, friendship, and fraternity with the Jewish community,” the statement noted, underscoring a longstanding tradition of harmony deeply rooted in shared history.

The Federation referenced “Morocco’s historical commitment to coexistence,” citing the example of the late King Mohammed V, who famously opposed Vichy-era discriminatory policies during World War II, thereby protecting Moroccan Jews from Nazi persecution. The statement emphasized that “this legacy of tolerance is a fundamental pillar of our identity, passed down with conviction to future generations.”

The Federation further expressed its support for the Netherlands’ inclusive model, which values diversity and promotes mutual respect among all communities. “Hatred has no place in our society,” the Federation stated, calling on everyone to resist divisive rhetoric that targets certain groups, fostering stereotypes that disrupt social harmony.

The statement also criticized attempts by some to exploit the situation, cautioning against what it termed as “fishing in troubled waters.” It pointed out that certain parties are attempting to unfairly portray the Moroccan community as solely responsible for these incidents, despite the involvement of individuals from various backgrounds.

The Federation argued that the purpose of such stigmatization is not only to tarnish the Moroccan community’s image but also to undermine the harmonious coexistence that it steadfastly defends.
