FFS Commends President Tebboune’s Call for National Dialogue: A Step Toward Democratic Consolidation

Algiers, Algeria | September 18th, 2024 — The Front of Socialist Forces (FFS) has firmly endorsed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent announcement to initiate a national dialogue aimed at fostering democratic participation and addressing Algeria’s pressing socio-political challenges. The President’s call for this inclusive dialogue, which was outlined in his speech following the swearing-in ceremony, stresses the importance of engaging all active forces in building a democratic state rooted in justice and the rule of law.
Speaking at a press conference held at the FFS’s headquarters on Wednesday, Youcef Aouchiche, the party’s First Secretary-General, praised the President’s dedication to this initiative. Aouchiche emphasized that such a dialogue is vital to consolidating Algeria’s democratic framework and addressing the complex issues facing the nation. “This initiative marks a pivotal moment in our pursuit of genuine democracy. It embodies the collective will to construct a national state capable of confronting the myriad challenges before us, both within Algeria and on the global stage,” Aouchiche remarked.
In his address, Aouchiche called for an in-depth revision of key legislative frameworks, particularly the laws regulating political parties and communal and wilaya codes. He highlighted the necessity of reforming the electoral law to ensure fairer representation within elected assemblies, a measure he believes will bolster the legitimacy of democratic institutions and encourage greater political participation.
Reflecting on the September 7 presidential election, Aouchiche noted that his candidacy represented a broader vision for the future of Algeria, beyond the mere pursuit of electoral success. He stressed that the FFS’s involvement in the election was part of a commitment to national stability and progress, asserting that “the national interest must always supersede any other considerations, especially given the sensitive geopolitical climate surrounding Algeria.”
In addition to backing the national dialogue, Aouchiche urged for a comprehensive reform of the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE) to enhance transparency and rebuild public confidence in Algeria’s electoral system. He contended that such reforms are necessary for reinforcing trust in the democratic process and ensuring the integrity of future elections.
