ALGIERS- In a momentous event, the inauguration of the Fiat plant in Oran, Algeria, took place, with the assembly of the first “Fiat 500” produced in the country. The ceremony took place in the presence of Algeria’s Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, and Italian Deputy Minister of Economic Development for Enterprises, Valentino Valentini, who, on his way to Algeria, announced the production of the first Fiat vehicle.
The inauguration was also marked by the attendance of Carlos Taveres, CEO of Stellantis, and Samir Cherfan, Stellantis Head for Africa and the Middle East. The event drew the participation of top executives from the company and local authorities, led by the Wali of the Oran province, Said Sayoud.
This significant presence imparts both economic and political symbolism to the event, symbolizing the revival of the Algerian automotive industry. The inauguration solidifies Algeria’s pivotal role within Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 Strategic Plan for the Middle East and Africa region. Notably, the launch featured the prime-time introduction of the new Fiat Titano pickup model.
For the Italian government, this occasion serves as an opportunity to bridge Italy and Africa in the automotive sector, aligning with the Mattei plan aimed at fostering mutual development with African countries.
Situated in the Tafraoui industrial zone, the plant represents a total investment of 200 million euros, showcasing a successful Algerian-Italian partnership. This partnership exemplifies the triad of action, ambition, and friendship, set to strengthen cooperation in various industrial sectors.
In preparation for the plant’s launch and production, Fiat El-Djazair has already hired over 200 employees, with a goal to reach nearly 2,000 new jobs by 2026 and an integration rate exceeding 30%. The plant aims to boost its initial production from 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles per year, featuring four Fiat models.
To support production needs, the province of Oran has allocated a land area of 40 hectares, along with an additional adjacent 80-hectare plot dedicated to local suppliers and subcontracting companies. The new Fiat plant stands as a testament to the growing strength of Algeria’s automotive sector and the positive trajectory of its industrial landscape.
