ALGIERS- The Fiat plant in Oran, owned by the Italian group Stellantis, is set to be inaugurated on December 11, 2023, marking a symbolic and historic occasion.

In the presence of Algerian and Italian government officials, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares will cut the ribbon on Monday, December 11, as reported by the Italian agency “Nova.News,” citing Algerian media sources while not contradicting the information.

The inauguration will coincide with the start of production for the very first Fiat 500 manufactured in Algeria. This marks the outcome of a strategic partnership between the Algerian government and Fiat aimed at boosting the local automotive industry and strengthening economic ties between Algeria and Italy.

Beyond meeting local demand, the plant represents an opportunity for the Italian giant to enter the Algerian market. The factory is expected to produce 90,000 vehicles annually in the long run, with three models from the Italian brand scheduled for the initial phase – Fiat 500, Fiat Doblo (in utility or tourist versions, not specified) in 2024, and a third model (yet to be disclosed) before 2026.

Furthermore, starting in 2026, a fourth model will be produced at the plant. As per the regional strategic plan, Fiat’s project in Algeria focuses on three integrated pillars: developing a network of efficient suppliers, contributing to the establishment of higher education and professional training sessions for the automotive industry, and producing, marketing, and exporting vehicles in line with international standards.

In this context, it’s worth noting that the integration rate of Fiat vehicles will be 35%, according to previous statements by the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun.

It’s important to highlight that Fiat Algeria and the Directorate of Vocational Training in the Oran province, especially the National Institute specialized in vocational training in ES Senia, have signed a partnership agreement for the training of young graduates in preparation for the launch of a subcontracting network to meet the demand for components used in vehicles.
