Finance Minister Lauds Customs Role in Safeguarding National Economy, Emphasizes Digitalization

ALGIERS- Algeria’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Laaziz Faid, commended the crucial role played by Algerian customs in safeguarding the national economy during the celebration of International Customs Day on January 26 in Algiers. The event, held under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, saw the presence of government officials, high-ranking state authorities, customs sector executives, and business organizations.
Minister Faid praised the customs department for its “effective and significant” role in implementing economic policies that contribute to the protection of the national economy, citizens, and the attraction of investments. He also acknowledged their efforts in combating corruption and, consequently, contributing to economic development.
Highlighting the customs’ importance in shaping the country’s economic policies and implementing the government’s action plan, Minister Faid emphasized their fundamental role as one of the pillars of the national economy. He underscored their role in creating the necessary frameworks to promote domestic products, aligning with the government’s efforts to encourage the national industry.
Minister Faid recalled the customs’ efforts to protect the national economy from fraud, smuggling, and various crimes, commending the “colossal efforts” made by customs officers in carrying out their duties with dedication and loyalty. He called on them to continue their efforts in coordination with various military and security bodies.
The Finance Minister emphasized the significance of the digitalization program initiated by his ministry, covering the customs apparatus. This program aims to address internal challenges and provide customs services that meet the expectations of beneficiaries and economic operators. Minister Faid highlighted the importance of digitalization for securing the economy and citizens while adapting to international technological and IT developments.
He stressed the need to strengthen participatory relations based on the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the customs institution and its various partners, expanding the scope of these relations to new stakeholders.
In the context of ongoing economic and foreign trade changes, Minister Faid emphasized the importance of improving strategies for good financial governance, particularly in administrative and economic dimensions. He stated that financial governance is crucial for protecting the economy from dangers and working towards strengthening trust among stakeholders.
Minister Faid concluded by outlining the priorities of the General Directorate, including improving the business environment, contributing to the competitiveness of national companies, securing customs revenues, protecting the territory and citizens, modernizing internal regulations, and accelerating digital transition. He affirmed that each structure within the Ministry of Finance has specific objectives and precise activities outlined in contractual agreements between directors-general and the Minister of Finance, manifested through objectives and performance contracts.
