ALGIERS- A financial scandal has erupted within the Royal Palace of the Makhzen as it is revealed that Princess Hasna, the sister of King Mohammed VI, incurred extravagant expenses for the Moroccan delegation participating in the COP28 summit in Dubai.
Mohamed Ouzzine, a parliamentary deputy and secretary-general of the Moroccan Popular Movement Party, disclosed that the delegation led by Princess Hasna to the COP28 climate summit in Dubai on November 30 cost the public treasury an enormous and unjustifiable budget.
Ouzzine specified that the Moroccan delegation to the climate summit in Dubai comprised 823 individuals transported by two double-decker Airbus A380 planes, incurring a high travel cost estimated between 5.76 and 12.34 million dirhams.
In a question addressed to the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development in Akhannouch’s government, Leila Benali, Ouzzine stated, “Many media outlets have circulated information about the size of the Moroccan delegation participating in the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).”
He added, “These media have also reported that the matter concerns the second-largest African delegation, and according to the same data, 80 percent of the participants in the Moroccan delegation are unnecessary and have no specific mission.”
Ouzzine pointed out that a number of delegation members “have no active role or specialization justifying their participation in the climate summit. On the contrary, most of them traveled to Dubai at the expense of the Royal Palace and the Kingdom’s public enterprises for self-satisfaction and paid tourist trips using public funds.”
The deputy emphasized that this practice “raises more than one question about the consistency of government slogans and practices, especially in light of an economic and social crisis, and in the context of the state’s commitment to social responsibility, which requires wisdom in managing expenditures characterized by scarcity and compassion for public money rather than wastefulness.”
Ouzzine called on Minister Leila Benali to provide necessary details regarding the identity of the participants and entities that covered their travel expenses, as well as the criteria adopted to determine eligibility for participation in this global summit.
These methods once again confirm the extent of corruption within the Royal Palace of the Makhzen, which seems indifferent to the extreme poverty and suffocating crises facing the Moroccan people. All attention from the king and his sisters appears focused on a false image of Morocco that requires wasting billions of public money in extravagance and bluffing, a lifestyle only the king and his entourage can afford, while the poor Moroccan people have only crumbs to survive on.
