ALGIERS- The first consultative meeting, held in Tunis, brought together the leaders of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya to address various sensitive issues concerning the present and future of the region. Discussions focused on common economic development goals and strategies to address security challenges. Emphasizing unity and political harmony, the leaders outlined a comprehensive approach to enhance regional stability and security.

Regular Meetings to Deepen Cooperation

One of the central outcomes of the meeting was the agreement to organize periodic meetings, alternating between the three countries, to strengthen bilateral relations. The goal is to elevate cooperation to a new level through collective reflection and action. This commitment reflects the strategic importance of the historic meeting, which will become a regular fixture on the diplomatic calendar.

In their joint statement, Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Kais Saied, and Mohamed Younes El-Menfi affirmed their readiness to engage with any sincere and credible political will that shares common constructive priorities. They stressed the importance of promoting collective action and cooperation to safeguard security, stability, and development in the region, while protecting against foreign interference.

Concerns Over Foreign Interventions in the Sahel

The leaders underscored the need to extend coordination beyond political issues to encompass all areas of socio-economic development for the benefit of their peoples. They strongly condemned foreign interventions in Libyan affairs and expressed support for efforts to organize elections to preserve Libya’s unity and territorial integrity. Additionally, they highlighted the pivotal role of neighboring countries in supporting Libyan authorities in restoring stability and security.

The joint communiqué also denounced the daily violations, war crimes, and genocide against the Palestinian people, calling for an immediate end to the aggression and the lifting of the blockade on Gaza. The leaders reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights and their unconditional support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Addressing the Sudan Crisis

A significant portion of the joint statement focused on the need for collective action to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and promote dialogue as a means to resolve the crisis peacefully. The leaders emphasized the importance of combating terrorism, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and organized crime to protect the region from these threats.

Partnerships in Hydraulics and Energy

The leaders emphasized the importance of joint projects and investments in key sectors, such as cereal and forage production, desalination, and water security. They highlighted the urgent need to exploit common groundwater resources in the northern Sahara and accelerate the implementation of projects for electrical interconnection.

Additionally, the leaders stressed the importance of partnerships in oil and gas exploration, mining, and renewable energies, including green hydrogen. They discussed the establishment of common free trade zones and the development of transportation networks to facilitate trade and exchange of goods between the three countries.

Cultural and Educational Cooperation

The first consultative meeting also addressed the promotion of cultural heritage, scientific research, vocational training, modern technologies, and student exchanges. The leaders pledged to encourage joint cultural and educational programs to strengthen ties between the three nations.

Next Steps

As the first consultative meeting concluded, the leaders appointed focal points from each country to oversee the implementation of the agreed-upon measures. They agreed to schedule the next consultative meeting at a mutually agreed-upon date and location.

The Tunis summit marks a significant step towards enhancing cooperation and stability in the region, signaling a commitment to shared goals and mutual prosperity. Through continued dialogue and collaboration, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya aim to address common challenges and seize opportunities for sustainable development and peace.
