ALGIERS- The Minister of Fisheries and Halieutic Productions, Ahmed Badani, presented the sector’s strategy for the year 2030 before the parliamentary committee on agriculture, fisheries, and environmental protection of the National People’s Assembly (APN).
The strategy aims to achieve an annual production of 100,000 tons in aquaculture, including 40,000 tons in marine aquaculture and 60,000 tons in freshwater aquaculture. The approach relies on incentives and measures adopted to support industry professionals. Initiatives include granting land for shipbuilding and repair workshops inside and outside fishing ports, permitting the import of used engines under five years old to boost production capacities, importing ships less than five years old, and fiscal exemptions outlined in the 2024 Finance Law.
These measures are expected to contribute to a production increase of “approximately 15,000 tons in aquaculture and 120,000 tons in fisheries,” according to the minister. He emphasized that the total production (fishing, aquaculture, and red tuna fishing) recorded in 2023 (until November) was 112,000 tons.
Looking ahead, the ministry has set higher production targets of 140,000 tons per year, including 100,000 tons per year in coastal and offshore fishing, 31,000 tons per year in fishing under an agreement with Mauritania, and 9,000 tons per year in deep-sea fishing (international waters).
In the previous year, the sector witnessed the stocking of 21.5 million fry in floating cages, compared to 19 million in 2022—an increase of 2.5 million fry, as reported by Ahmed Badani.
The minister highlighted other achievements, such as the establishment of 42 marine aquaculture farms (including two new ones in 2023), the introduction of floating cages in the capital’s farms, and the launch of 52 new projects for freshwater aquaculture.
In terms of shipbuilding, the year 2023 saw the construction of three large ships measuring 35 meters, with 12 more under construction, including one that is 42 meters long—a first in Algeria.
Additionally, 12,515 students received training in various institutes and schools within the sector. The minister emphasized the importance of the upcoming 9th edition of the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition, scheduled for February 8-11, 2024, in Oran, where national and international companies related to maritime fishing and aquaculture will participate. The event will feature workshops and seminars to showcase sector capabilities and attract new investments.
