FM Attaf Affirms Algeria’s Willingness to Support South Sudan in Election Organization

Addis Ababa, February 16, 2024 – Speaking at a ministerial meeting of the African Union’s Committee of Five on the situation in the Republic of South Sudan, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to assist the Republic of South Sudan in organizing elections.
According to a statement from the ministry, Attaf explained that Algeria’s support aims to contribute to resolving the crisis and opening up broad perspectives for effectively addressing the various challenges facing this brotherly country.
Regarding the approach of the Committee of Five, Attaf advocated for strengthening the committee’s role and intensifying its activities in favor of stability in South Sudan, focusing on two main axes.

On the first axis, the minister emphasized the need for the committee to engage with internal parties in South Sudan to raise awareness about the importance and gravity of the historical responsibility they bear.
As for the second axis, he underscored the importance of mobilizing the efforts of various international actors and encouraging them to renew their support for the peace process in South Sudan. This is particularly crucial as the country enters a decisive and sensitive phase in preparation for its first-ever elections, scheduled for later this year.
