Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — In a resolute assertion of Algeria’s commitment to combating terrorism in Africa, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, emphasized Algeria’s profound responsibility as a member of the United Nations Security Council. In an interview with AL24 News, he stated, “The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is entrusted with overseeing the fight against terrorism on behalf of his African counterparts, a responsibility we are determined to honor.”
Reviving Global Attention to a Persistent Threat
To amplify international focus, Algeria called for a ministerial meeting of the Security Council, parallel to discussions on Gaza, to address terrorism in Africa. Highlighting the significance of this initiative, Attaf noted the “encouraging participation of African foreign ministers keenly interested in this critical dossier.” He lamented the international community’s recent neglect of Africa’s ongoing struggle with terrorism, which has evolved into a severe and multifaceted threat.
Attaf outlined four alarming trends underscoring the urgency of renewed global engagement.
The Escalating Threat
Firstly, he pointed out that while terrorism is waning in other parts of the world, Africa has become its new epicenter. “Terrorism is not just persisting in Africa; it is expanding,” Attaf warned. Secondly, the phenomenon has grown in scale and organization, transforming from fragmented groups into what he described as “terrorist armies,” reflecting their increased recruitment capacity.
The third point involved their growing arsenal. Terrorist organizations across the continent have procured sophisticated weaponry, enabling them to conduct operations resembling conventional military tactics. This leads to the fourth and perhaps most concerning aspect: their strategic evolution. “Terrorist groups in Africa have demonstrated advanced military strategies and tactical proficiency, signaling a dangerous evolution in their capabilities,” he said.
Algeria’s Leadership and the Way Forward
In light of these developments, Algeria is determined to spotlight this escalating threat. Minister Attaf stressed, “This is a major responsibility Algeria must shoulder. President Tebboune, as Africa’s spokesperson on counterterrorism, is uniquely positioned to lead this vital effort.”
Algeria’s approach centers on rallying the international community to tackle the crisis comprehensively. Attaf urged global powers and multilateral institutions to recognize the gravity of the situation and recommit to combating terrorism in Africa. He concluded by reaffirming Algeria’s unwavering dedication to its leadership role in this struggle, emphasizing, “We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this growing menace. Algeria stands ready to fulfill its mandate and lead Africa’s collective fight against terrorism.”
This clarion call from Algeria aims to unify efforts and resources to confront a threat that imperils not just Africa but global stability.
