ALGIERS– “The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, received a phone call from his brother the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk , who congratulated him on his appointment as head of Algerian diplomacy,” read the press release.

The two ministers evoked, on this occasion, “the relations of brotherhood and cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania, while welcoming the efforts made to build a solid partnership that is mutually beneficial for the two sisterly countries and brotherly peoples, and further strengthen political coordination on regional and international issues of common interest, in accordance with the guidelines of the presidents of the two countries,” the communiqué concluded.

It is worth recalling that Ramtane Lamamra’s successor at the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad already led Algerian diplomacy for almost four years in the 1990s, precisely from January 1996 to December 1999. A graduate of the National School of Administration (ENA) in 1975, Mr. Attaf made his career in diplomacy.

He was Algeria’s ambassador to India, Yugoslavia and the United Kingdom. He also assumed the missions of a Secretary of State, in charge of African and Maghreb Affairs.
