Algiers, Algeria | December 30th, 2024 — Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf delivered a comprehensive and forward-looking address on Monday, presenting a detailed assessment of Algeria’s diplomatic achievements in 2024 and outlining a robust agenda for 2025. Speaking during a press conference, Attaf highlighted Algeria’s strategic priorities on the international stage, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to regional stability, global collaboration, and energy security.

A Landmark Initiative for Palestine and the Middle East

Attaf announced Algeria’s plans to host a ministerial meeting at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) focused on the Palestinian question and the broader Middle East. He affirmed Algeria’s proactive stance on addressing one of the most enduring international crises.

“Algeria will convene a ministerial session at the UNSC to deliberate on the developments of the Palestinian issue and the evolving situation in the Middle East,” Attaf declared. The meeting will also address the alarming spread of terrorism, particularly across the African continent, underscoring Algeria’s leadership in counter-terrorism efforts.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation: The Tripoli Summit

As part of Algeria’s focus on fostering regional stability, Attaf revealed the forthcoming third summit between Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, to be held in Tripoli at the beginning of 2025. This summit builds on Algeria’s proposal to establish a trilateral mechanism for consultation and cooperation, which has already received endorsement from its North African neighbors.

“The trilateral mechanism has translated into tangible projects that address the pressing issues facing these countries,” Attaf stated. The summit is expected to further solidify Algeria’s role as a cornerstone of peace and cooperation in the region.

Attaf also highlighted President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s diplomatic outreach, including state visits to Tunisia, Mauritania, and Oman, as well as the reciprocal visits of African leaders to Algeria. These engagements underline Algeria’s growing influence in fostering collaboration across the continent.

Advocating for Africa’s Global Representation

In alignment with President Tebboune’s directives, Attaf emphasized Algeria’s active campaign for Africa’s equitable representation on the global stage. Algeria’s candidacy for the vice-presidency of the African Union (AU) is central to this mission.

“There is a broad consensus among African nations advocating for two permanent seats for Africa on the UNSC,” Attaf remarked. “As Africans, we are collectively working toward realizing this long-overdue recognition.”

Syria: A Call for Dialogue under UN Oversight

On the Syrian crisis, Attaf reiterated Algeria’s principled stance in favor of a resolution grounded in dialogue and respect for sovereignty.

“We insist on three core principles: Syria belongs to all its citizens, respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, and the necessity for dialogue to proceed under the auspices of the United Nations,” he explained. These principles highlight Algeria’s diplomatic pragmatism and commitment to fostering sustainable solutions.

Algeria’s Key Role in Energy Security

In the energy domain, Attaf positioned Algeria as a pivotal player in addressing the global energy crisis. Algeria will host the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) at the beginning of 2025, reaffirming its role as a reliable energy partner. Additionally, President Tebboune’s anticipated participation in the G7 summit reflects Algeria’s strategic contributions to ensuring energy security on a global scale.

Minister Ahmed Attaf’s announcements underscore Algeria’s dedication to proactive and impactful diplomacy. From championing the Palestinian cause to enhancing regional cooperation and addressing critical global challenges such as energy security, Algeria is poised to reinforce its standing as a key player on the international stage.
