ALGIERS- In a recent display of diplomatic engagement, Assistant Secretary of State of the United States, Wendy Sherman, and Ambassador Elizabeth Aubin highlighted the significance of the relationship between Algeria and the United States. Through discussions and public statements, both officials emphasized the strong bond and shared support for various global issues.
Wendy Sherman took to Twitter to announce her telephone conversation with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, extending her congratulations to Algeria on its election to the United Nations Security Council. The conversation revolved around the robust Algerian-American relationship and their joint endorsement of the UN political process for Western Sahara. These discussions reflect the commitment of both nations to regional stability and the further enhancement of their bilateral ties.
The State Department issued a press release providing additional insights into the conversation. The release emphasized the shared efforts to advance regional stability and strengthen Algerian-American relations. Both countries’ officials also discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reiterating their commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.
Deputy Secretary of State Sherman expressed her delight at Algeria’s election to the Security Council and affirmed the United States’ full support for the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General. The discussions also acknowledged the intensified efforts of the Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in seeking a lasting and dignified political solution for Western Sahara.
The reaffirmation of the Biden administration’s position on Western Sahara in this statement aligns with their previous stance and support for the UN’s peace process. The United States supports de Mistura’s mission to facilitate a permanent political solution that ensures a dignified life for the people of Western Sahara and the region. Notably, the US no longer refers to the kingdom of Morocco’s pseudo-sovereignty over Western Sahara, asserting its commitment to finding a resolution through multiple proposals presented by the involved parties.
This declaration gains particular significance when viewed through the lens of Algerian-American bilateral relations. It highlights their shared position in support of de Mistura’s mission, especially given the recent state visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Russia. This reaffirms the strong and solid ties between Algeria and the United States.
A clear demonstration of this was witnessed at the opening of the international fair in Algiers, where American Ambassador Elizabeth Aubin engaged in a friendly and warm discussion with President Tebboune. Though the specifics of their conversation were not disclosed, the amicable nature of their interaction was evident. Ambassador Aubin reinforced this sentiment in a tweet accompanied by a photo, describing the connection between the USA and Algeria as one of friendship. She further expressed pride in highlighting the presence and capabilities of American companies in Algeria, emphasizing the crucial nature of the Algerian market.
These positions not only attest to Algeria’s balanced and non-aligned approach to international relations but also underline its significance as a pivotal state in North Africa and the Sahel region.
