ALGIERS- In a detailed report, France-Info highlights the precarious situation in Morocco, asserting that the country is on the brink of a social explosion. The article points out the longstanding issues of predation, corruption, and social injustice under the rule of the Makhzen, which have ultimately sown the seeds of its own demise.

The report reveals a significant development: for the first time in its history, Morocco is set to provide direct and monthly social assistance to one million disadvantaged families. King Mohammed VI has spearheaded this extensive reform, allocating a budget of approximately 2.3 billion euros for the year 2024. The aid, which amounts to at least 500 dirhams (around 45 euros), is aimed at mitigating the impact of an impending social crisis.

France-Info emphasizes that this unprecedented social aid represents a departure from previous indirect and non-targeted assistance. The report underscores the urgency of the situation, with Morocco facing social unrest and protests against the high cost of living and widespread poverty, particularly in cities like Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat.

Quoting the media outlet, “In 2022, the price index increased by 11%, and by the third quarter of this year, it already showed a 9% rise. The average salary in Morocco is around 450 euros, with one-third of families’ budgets dedicated to food. Unemployment affects over 1.5 million Moroccans, reaching unprecedented levels in the last 20 years. Nearly half of the urban population aged 15-24 is unemployed, and the earthquake in Marrakech has also had adverse effects on tourism.”

The report concludes that King Mohammed VI’s decision to dip into his coffers reflects the gravity of the situation, suggesting that the regime is teetering on the edge. The economic strain, combined with political crises and widespread protests against the controversial normalization agreement with the Zionist entity, paints a grim picture for the future of Morocco under the reign of King Mohammed VI.
