France’s Brazen Endorsement of Colonialism: Algeria Stands Firm Against Paris and Rabat’s Dangerous Agenda

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers, Algeria | February 19th, 2025 — In a flagrant affront to international legality, the French government has once again demonstrated its contempt for fundamental diplomatic principles. The recent visit of French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati to Dakhla, in the occupied territory of Western Sahara, represents an unprecedented escalation in the ongoing political and media offensive orchestrated by France and Morocco against Algeria. This reckless maneuver, condemned unequivocally by Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), constitutes a dangerous and deliberate violation of international law.

The Algerian government, in a strongly worded statement, denounced Dati’s visit as an egregious provocation that blatantly undermines the United Nations-mandated decolonization process in Western Sahara. Algeria’s position is unequivocal: this act is a disgraceful attempt to normalize Moroccan colonial expansionism, facilitated by a French administration that increasingly aligns itself with the ideological framework of far-right forces nostalgic for imperialist domination.

France’s Complicity in the Moroccan Colonial Agenda

The hypocrisy of Paris is particularly striking given that France is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, an institution tasked with ensuring global stability and upholding the principles of decolonization. By endorsing Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara, France is actively working to consolidate the Makhzen’s illegal presence in the region, in direct contradiction with UN resolutions and international legal norms.

Algeria has categorically rejected this latest violation of international law, exposing France’s duplicitous stance on issues of sovereignty and self-determination. The Algerian Foreign Ministry highlighted that France’s posture amounts to a dangerous attempt to entrench an illegal occupation, while also deliberately obstructing efforts to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Sahrawi question.

The timing of this provocation is no coincidence. Dati’s visit comes at a moment when France’s extreme right-wing factions, along with elements of the Macron administration, seek to permanently torpedo Algerian-French relations. This calculated move serves a dual purpose:

  1. Advancing the Moroccan colonial project in Western Sahara, in total disregard of international law.
  2. Worsening tensions with Algeria, in an effort to undermine growing calls for a fair and balanced French policy in the region.

An Unholy Alliance: The Makhzen and the French Far Right

The political forces backing this aggressive posture are revealing. The far-right factions within France, led by figures such as Bruno Retailleau, along with elements of the Macron government, have increasingly aligned themselves with Morocco’s authoritarian monarchy, forming a reactionary bloc intent on reviving colonial narratives. Their goal is not merely to support Morocco’s expansionist ambitions, but also to reignite anti-Algerian sentiment within France, fostering a climate of hostility aimed at erasing decades of historical reckoning.

Dati’s actions must also be understood within the broader far-right agenda seeking to sabotage any possibility of Franco-Algerian reconciliation. Through calculated provocations such as this, these political forces are attempting to demonize Algeria, further entrenching divisions and ensuring that France remains complicit in Morocco’s illegal occupation.

Algeria’s Diplomatic Retaliation: A Principled and Unyielding Stand

In response to these neocolonial provocations, Algeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to international legality. Algeria will not be intimidated by France’s reckless endorsement of Morocco’s expansionist policies, nor will it remain silent as Paris aligns itself with a regime intent on subjugating the Sahrawi people.

Algeria’s diplomatic response is measured but firm. The country will continue to champion the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, working alongside its international partners to expose France’s role in perpetuating the Moroccan occupation.

Furthermore, Algeria recognizes that despite the efforts of French political elites to whitewash Morocco’s colonial ambitions, the true sentiments of the French people remain distinct from those of their government. Algeria’s deep historical ties with the French working class and progressive movements remain intact, and no amount of political manipulation can erase the bonds of solidarity between the Algerian and French peoples.
