France’s Reckless Diplomatic Escalation: Algeria Rejects Arbitrary Deportation, Exposing Paris’s Waning Influence

Catherine Tricot, director of Regards, also condemned the provocative nature of the expulsion, pointing out that the actual instigation came from the French prefecture of Hérault, not Algeria. “Sending someone without prior diplomatic coordination is reckless. France should have known better,” she remarked. Tricot further warned that France is risking a ‘war of words’ with Algeria, a nation vital to its regional influence.

Political analyst Hasni Abidi dismantled Retailleau’s threats of economic sanctions, highlighting France’s limited influence in the face of Algeria’s assertive diplomacy. “France lacks significant economic leverage over Algeria. Resorting to such threats only exposes Paris’s weakened position,” he remarked.

The mounting criticism underscores a broader decline in France’s geopolitical standing, especially in Africa, where it has faced multiple diplomatic setbacks. Tricot summed up the growing frustration, warning that “France is losing influence in Africa, deteriorating relations with Algeria, and alienating key partners.
