Algiers, Algeria | December 9th, 2024 — Algeria has once again proven its steadfast resolve in defending its sovereignty and national security by uncovering a sophisticated espionage operation orchestrated by French intelligence. This sinister plot, aimed at penetrating extremist networks and gathering sensitive information within the Algerian capital, was dismantled through the vigilance and strategic counterintelligence measures of the Algerian security forces.

On Sunday, Algerian state television aired a video featuring the confessions of a detainee from Tipaza province. The individual admitted to collaborating with French intelligence to relay information about extremist elements in Algeria. According to his testimony, French operatives instructed him to infiltrate popular neighborhoods in Algiers, including Bab El Oued, El Harrach, and Hussein Dey, following initial assignments in Tipaza. The detainee revealed that French handlers had provided explicit instructions to switch from widely used platforms like WhatsApp to encrypted applications such as Wire, employing coded language and aliases like “Real Madrid” to avoid detection.

Unraveling the Web of Deception

The detainee’s decision to inform Algerian authorities about the covert operations marked a critical turning point. Under supervision, he continued his interactions with French intelligence, enabling Algerian counterintelligence to map the broader conspiracy. This operation highlights a broader pattern of French attempts to infiltrate Algerian society, particularly through espionage activities targeting socio-political landscapes and key institutions.

Reports have increasingly exposed France’s dual-pronged strategy of employing physical and digital infiltration to undermine Algerian sovereignty. On the ground, agents sought to exploit social vulnerabilities in densely populated neighborhoods. Meanwhile, in cyberspace, French operatives engaged in persistent cyber-espionage campaigns, aiming to compromise Algeria’s official networks, government systems, and strategic sectors, particularly energy resources.

A History of Intrigue and Subversion

France’s espionage tactics against Algeria are part of a longstanding effort to exert influence over its former colony. Algerian authorities have documented attempts to gather intelligence on government policies, military strategies, and economic developments, particularly those linked to oil and gas reserves. Prominent political figures, activists, and cultural influencers have also been targeted in these schemes, with French intelligence reportedly employing digital surveillance and data extraction to shape narratives and manipulate public opinion.

This covert activity is not without consequence. It has exacerbated diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Paris, culminating in severe political rifts. In 2023, Algeria postponed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s planned visit to Paris three times, citing unresolved grievances. The strain reached a breaking point when France openly supported Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara issue, leading Algeria to recall its ambassador from Paris on July 30, 2023.

Strengthening Algeria’s Defenses

In the wake of these revelations, Algeria has intensified its efforts to bolster its cybersecurity infrastructure and heighten vigilance in politically sensitive regions. The government has also taken significant diplomatic measures, demanding accountability from France and urging it to cease interference in Algeria’s internal affairs.

By exposing and neutralizing this latest plot, Algeria has sent a resounding message of resilience to France and the international community: attempts to destabilize Algerian sovereignty will not be tolerated.
