ALGIERS- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, has responded to the comments made by Catherine Colonna, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, regarding the Algerian national anthem. Colonna had referred to the anthem as “out of time” during a diplomatic event in Paris. In an interview with “Agenzia Nova,” Attaf expressed his surprise at Colonna’s attempt to pass judgment on the Algerian national anthem.

During his visit to Italy, Attaf responded to Colonna’s criticism with a touch of humor, stating, “Perhaps she could have also criticized the music. Maybe the music just didn’t suit her.” His lighthearted remark highlighted the subjective nature of personal preferences when it comes to art forms such as national anthems.

However, Attaf did not shy away from addressing the underlying issue. He emphasized that some French parties and politicians tend to exploit Algeria for their own political gain. Attaf remarked, “For certain French parties or politicians, one has the impression that Algeria has become an easy subject to use for political purposes.” These remarks shed light on the perceived instrumentalization of Algeria by some French politicians, which Attaf believes is a result of political expediency.

Furthermore, Attaf pointed out the contradiction between the criticism directed at the Algerian national anthem and the existence of agreements regarding immigration between Algeria and France. He expressed his confusion, stating, “We really don’t understand why they have to make so much noise. As I have already said, these people adopt these attitudes out of political expediency.”

Attaf’s response reflects his disappointment at the politicization of Algeria and its symbols by certain elements within the French political landscape. He perceives these criticisms as attempts to score political points rather than engage in constructive dialogue or foster a genuine understanding between the two countries.

The national anthem holds significant cultural and emotional value for any country, acting as a unifying symbol and a representation of its history, struggles, and aspirations. It is natural for the people of a nation to feel defensive when their anthem is subjected to criticism, especially from external sources.

In the case of Algeria, whose independence from French colonial rule in 1962 shaped its national identity, the anthem carries even greater significance. The lyrics of the anthem, written by the renowned poet Moufdi Zakaria and set to music by the composer Mohamed Triki, evoke the spirit of Algeria’ struggle for freedom and self-determination. Criticism of a national anthem, regardless of its source, can be perceived as an affront to a nation’s sovereignty and cultural heritage.
